Its 4th US Open and 15th Grand Slam for Serena Williams

After the US Open 2012 Women’s Single event came to a halt, one name stands out as one of the greats in the game – Serena Williams. The American has been playing tremendous tennis all summer going into the US Open Championship.

With the Wimbledon crown and the Olympics women’s tennis in the bag, she reported for duty at the US all trail blazing. The manner she dispatched her opponents including the giant killing Sera Errani at the semis. She was obviously on a demolition spree, and relentlessly showed any mercy to her opponents.

It seemed it was business as usual when Victoria Azarenka confronted her in the finals when she rallied to a 6-2 win in the first set with just a little over half an hour. The Belarusian fought back in the second set. First breaking Serena’s first serve and wrapped up second set 6-2. She gave back what she received in the first set.

Azarenka has not lost any match going into third set this season and seemed history was about repeating itself when she went 2-1 up. But Serena broke and held serve to make it 3-2. World’s no 1 won 3 straight points and was serving for the match at 5-4. With body language as that of one throwing in the towel, Serena looked down and out or so it seemed.

With her back to wall, she produced outstanding tennis to break Azarenka for 5-5, held her serve for 6-5. Azarenka tried to hold her serve to drag the match to a tie break but it was Serena who fell on back in ecstasy as Azarenka lobbed the ball high off the court for Serena’s 4th US Open Championship.

It is never over until it is over.
