Enforcing The Law On Our Roads

Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola Tuesday 17 July 2012 reprimanded two military officers for driving on the dedicated Bus Rapid Transit lane.

Driving on the BRT lane at the Outer Marina on the Island, the two soldiers were accosted by His Excellency who expressed his dismay at the actions of those he felt should show discipline and professionalism but end up being violators of the BRT regulation.

Colonel K.I. Yusuf drove an Army Green Peugeot 406 with registration number BO1 – 150 NA, while Staff Sergeant A.J. Adeomi drove a black Toyota Camry.

Colonel Yusuf reportedly alighted from his car and saluted Fashola repeatedly, saying, “I am sorry, very, very sorry.” Unimpressed by the belated action, Mr Fashola asked, “Why, as a senior military officer, did you choose to break the law instead of preserving it?”

The governor promised that the culprits would be sanctioned appropriately. Large cross section of commuters and passers-by whose attention was drawn by the incident commended the governor for his actions.

Enigmablast had two weeks ago in an article titled “Nigeria Traffic Faux Pas – Genuine or Lack of Discipline” wondered why Nigerians can never be patient on the road. Hoping actions like this could bring some sanity into our Roads and culture.
